A disc priest is an elite group of priests who conduct sacred ceremonies and have high-ranking roles in parish life.
They may hold high office, hold high-level positions in the diocese or be priests themselves.
They also have a wide variety of vocations including priests, laypeople and others.
Disc priests are in charge of distributing communion, which includes the cup of blessing, to people who come in for the first time, according to the American Archdiocese.
Most disc priests serve in dioceses in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the Caribbean.
It’s unclear if the new priest is a member of any of those diocesan groups, or if he’s a newly minted member.
The new priest, who is a new priest in the Diocese of Chicago, was named Francis Joseph Gagnon, the Archdiocesan Church of Chicago said in a statement.
The priest who was named in the statement is a Catholic priest, not a Catholic layperson.
He has a strong desire to serve the parish and his dedication to God is the basis for his ministry, said the Archbishops’ Conference of the Diocesaries and Universities.
The Archdiakies statement said Gagnons first assignment will be in the Chicago diocese.
The archdiocese said Gignon will be serving as the director of the Church’s Youth Ministry.
The bishop said he was impressed with Gagns passion and desire to lead his diocese as a priest and priestly education in the faith.
Gagnson’s appointment came a week after a young priest was arrested and charged with sexually abusing a child.
The suspect, a priest in his 20s, allegedly had sexual contact with a girl and then had intercourse with her multiple times, according a news release from the Chicago police department.
A preliminary hearing was set for Monday.
The boy who reported the abuse to authorities was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the case, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
